As we make the transition to common core our students are expected to be reading informational text. Newsela is a new free website that offers leveled informational articles about current events. One concern I know teachers have mentioned is that it’s difficult to find an article that meets the reading levels of all of their students. With Newsela changing the grade level of an article is as easy as clicking one button.
To use Newsela a student or teacher searches for an article using the search bar or selects a category from the menu. Once you find the perfect article simply uses the blue bar on the side to increase or lower the reading level of the piece. Below is an example of the same article but with different reading levels selected.
Newsela only offers visitors four free articles. I suggest creating a teacher account to truly maximize the full potential of the website. With a teacher account you will be able to view the grade level that corresponds to the selected lexile level, assign students readings, and have access to built in comprehension quizzes. No matter what subject you teach, Newsela has something to offer. If you have any questions, need any help setting up an account, or find any awesome articles please let me know!
